There is growing interest in developing hybrid electric-internal combustion eco-cars, or supercars, getting 64-128+ kilometers per liter, that is around 150-300+miles per gallon. They get most of their power from a small hybrid electric/fuel engine that makes its own electricity and uses a small battery or flywheel to provide the extra energy needed for acceleration and hill climbing.

The small gasoline engine keeps the batteries charged, thus reducing the number of batteries needed and greatly increasing the range. If needed, the electric engine could also operate emission-free in urban areas. Canada's HydroQuebec has developed a hybrid car system that places small electric motors in all four of a car's wheels.

In 1997 Toyota developed a hybrid electric/gasoline vehicle that is twice as fuel efficient as an equivalent gasoline-powered car, while significantly reducing air pollution emissions. This car, called Prius, is on the market in Japan and gets 28 miles per liter. 1n 1999, Honda began selling a fuel efficient, hybrid-engine car.

A major limitation of gaseous fuels such as natural gas and hydrogen is that they require fairly heavy and bulky fuel tanks, which reduce efficiency and range. However, a hybrid car might be able to overcome this problem by going 700 kilometers on just 5.6-11 liters of gas.

Such supercars will be lighter and safer than conventional cars because their bodies and many other parts will be made of light weight composite materials that absorb much more crash energy per unit of weight than the steel in today's car.

Today most race bar bodies are made of carbon fiber plastics, which is why race car drivers can usually walk away after hitting a wall at 320 kilometers. Car bodies and other parts made from composite materials don't rust and can be recycled. Thus, switching to such ecocars would create more jobs. In 1998 Chrysler was close to perfecting a plastic car body using a cheap, common beverage-bottle plastic called PET that could have the price of a car and be on the market not later 2011.

Amory Lovins and other researcher project that with proper financial incentives, such low-polluting, ultralight, ultrasafe, ultra efficient hybrid electric/internal combustion engine cars could be on the market within a decade. With incentives such as tax creditors or energy rebates, such cars could replace much of the existing car fleet within 10-12 years.

The US Aims to Tighten Fuel Efficiency Norms

The American government has decided on a new fuel consumption agreement with the largest car manufacturers in the country. The U.S. is set to considerably tighten its fuel consumption norms for vehicles.

The new treaty, however, won't be effective immediately. The parties agreed to gradually decrease the average fleet fuel consumption to 54.5 miles per gallon between 2017 and 2025. This would equate to 1/23 of the current amount.

A lot of people in the automotive industry are not particularly happy with the new fuel consumption norm. They are not at all happy, actually. The new norm has been received under strong criticism.

American consumers to profit from the new fuel consumption norms

If we take into account current prices, American fuel consumers should be able to save up to $ 8,200 per car on fuel through the U.S. government's plans. This would mean that oil consumption would eventually decrease with a good 2.2 million barrels every day.

However, the numerous critics claim that it will take at least 25 years before the positive effects of reducing fuel consumption of cars and vehicles in such a way will be visible. Why, you ask? Because the measures will only take effect in 2025 and because the effects are calculated on the entire life cycle of a car.

Consequences of the fuel-efficiency norm for car makers

A direct result of the agreement is that all vehicles would have to become more fuel-efficient. That way new and used cars on American roads will become more environmentally friendly.

The car makers will also be directly effected by the new fuel-efficiency norm. They will have to build cars that meet the new standards. Green regulations, however, are being set in other parts of the world too. So the car manufacturers would not have to make an exception for the U.S. market. Quite the contrary, European regulations, for example, are very strict.

Extensive criticism from car manufacturers and from congress

Criticism is most heard on the side of the car manufacturers. Car maker Volkswagen; in particular, was very vocal about its discontent. The manufacturer is firmly opposed to the new norm because it is disadvantageous towards regular passenger cars and vehicles.

The German car brand feels the agreement is far too easy on SUVs and pick-up trucks because these vehicles fall under the so-called 'trucks regime', which allows them to emit much higher quantities of CO2.

There have also been loud rumors that the new fuel consumption agreement was made in back rooms by members of the government and certain car manufacturers. The U.S. Congress took this rumor very seriously. Congress expressed its concerns on the subject because this would be in clear violation of U.S. law.

Therefore, a formal investigation was started. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, are looking into the realization of the agreement and continue to oversee the procedures.

We will have to wait for the result of the investigation to see whether or not the measure is going to be revoked or reworked.

Electric Cars Are Clean But Are They Efficient?

With such an emphasis on "man-made global warming" and the price of fossil fuel, a lot of attention has been given to alternative fuels for vehicles. Air quality is very important, and we need to do whatever we can within reason to try to improve it. We have already enhanced our air quality in a significant way, over the past ten to twenty years. There is no real proof of "man-made" global warming, even though it is one of the biggest reasons given to develop alternative fuels for vehicles. Many scientists have found that there actually is, and has been global warming; and cooling, for thousands of years, which is cyclical. Most global warming they are aware of, happened before fossil fuel was first used. Personally I don't believe that the emission from fossil fuel is causing any global warming.

However, with the rising price of fossil fuel, it isn't a bad idea to look into alternative means for fueling vehicles. Some want to not only give up their comfort, but to force others to do the same. We don't have to give up luxury to accomplish what we need. Although, no one should be forced into the mold of someone else's agenda, there are a number of alternative fuels that will actually help clean up air quality, while also providing the comfort we have become accustomed to.

One alternative to a gasoline powered car is the electric car. When it comes to air quality, an electric car puts out very little measurable pollution. Unfortunately, the production of the energy that charges its battery pack is, for the most part, produced with fossil fuel, which does pollute the air.

There are some advantages to an electric vehicle, which include cleaner emissions than conventional gas engines. The emissions from an electric car are even cleaner than emissions from a compressed natural gas vehicle. Keep in mind the energy used to recharge the batteries does cause pollution, unless it comes from a renewable source of energy. The actual savings in the cost of gasoline per month averages about $100 for the average driver. Electric cars that use a lithium-manganese battery pack have been proven to be pretty reliable.

The disadvantages of electric vehicles far outweigh their advantages. These vehicles are much more expensive than are conventional cars with a gasoline engine. The battery pack, which has an unpredictable shelf life, does ultimately have to be replaced. That can cost as much as $15,000.

Batteries on electric cars also tend to suffer in performance, during cold weather. They don't have the power that a conventional car has and can travel much less distances between charges. The time it takes to recharge is also excessive. It's not like pulling into a gas station and filling up in five to ten minutes.

Although electric cars are very clean, they aren't very efficient. They may work for a select few. However, this is not the car for most people, as it can't fulfill the needs of most families.

Compressed Natural Gas cars have a much brighter future than electric cars at this point.They cut way back on harmful emissions and are more economical to buy and operate. They are not limited in the distance they can travel or in the time it takes to refuel them. As soon as refueling stations are available, this car should take off with the public. Electric cars have a long way to go before they will be a viable alternative for most individuals.

Not only will this be more fuel efficient, but also it will mean a less stressful trip because you won't have to be watching your back for police all the time.
